INFO
In front of you lies a pretty special mix. The running time of this mix is 1 hour, 1 minute and 40 seconds and it contains 620 different tracks! Moreover, it is full of “synergetic” parts, where the tracks combined have, in one way or the other, a certain match. I am positive that a mix of this kind has never been made before.
To be able to discover all 620 used tracks, it is strongly recommended to listen to this mix very carefully. Some of the tracks are clearly present and discovering them is a piece of cake. Other tracks are hidden in a way that the lyrics match with the lyrics of another track so that they can not be discovered that easily. For example: (Hey you) the Rock Steady Crew has been used in 3 different places but you have to listen very carefully to hear all 3! Nevertheless, if you know where it is, it is very clear that you hear a sample of this track.
Making this mix took me more than 1000 hours, which means that every minute took me almost 17 hours. I started in October 2000 and it was finished 1 full year later, on 5-November-2001.
This mix makes the index-counter on your CD-player run like hell:-)
Enjoy it!

The making of…
I started off somewhere in the middle, at the part with M.A.R.R.S.-Pump up the volume and Rick Astley-Never gonna give you up (the beginning of tracknr. 24). From there, I went right on to the end. The length of this part is about 42 minutes. After that, I proceeded with the first part (from Soul II Soul-Back to Life on). This part had to have a length of about 18 minutes, because the complete mix should be almost exactly 1 hour. Moreover, in these 18 minutes the mix should linearly increase in BPM from 100 to 116.3 because the part I already finished started at 116.3 BPM.
I selected the tracks to be used mainly on their titles, because I was looking for maximum synergy. Non-matching BPM’s did not keep me from using certain tracks. For example: Shannon’s Give me Tonight is originally about 118 BPM, but you will find it in the mix on about 127 BPM, just because the “Give me” of Shannon fitted very well with the “Gimme Gimme” of Abba and the “Gimme” of Ottawan’s Hands Up.
The mix was entirely made on PC. No samplers or other stuff was used.
HINTS:
I started with this ultimate attempt to put as many different tracks as possible in a 1 hour mix in October-2000, without knowing if the trick could be done. I began with tracks like M.A.R.R.S - Pump up the volume, Dazz Band - Let it all blow etc. at a tempo of about 116 BPM. Pretty soon, I began to think that the trick COULD be done.... By constantly calculating the average time per track, I knew after 10 minutes were finished that I would be able to put in between 550 and 650 tracks.
However, having listened to the first results over and over again, I knew that a full hour of this would be hardly bearable to listen to. Something special had to be in the mix to keep the attention of the listeners. I began combining tracks that had a certain synergy, i.e. titles that sound alike, lyrics that fit very well together, various tracks of the same artist in a row. Non-matching BPM's did not at all keep me from using certain tracks if I liked the synergy between those tracks. For example: Shannon's "Give me Tonight" is originally about 118 BPM, but you will find it in the mix on about 127 BPM, just because the "Give me" of Shannon fitted very well with the "Gimme Gimme" of Abba and the "Gimme" of Ottawan's Hands Up. I challenge you to find all tricks I put in!
Also, I put in some tracks that normally will never be used in a mix, for example the Benny Hill Theme and "Op een grote paddestoel". I had the feeling that this would improve the endresult but still I wasn't satisfied yet. Frans van de Kamp came up with the solution: Build in some "quiet" parts, that is: parts in which you hear a certain track for, let's say, half a minute instead of 6 seconds.
From then on it was a matter of time and lots and lots of patience. Fortunately I had very good mental backup from Frans van de Kamp, Sjon Jansen en Eddy van Loo.
More than 1000 hours of mixing later, in october 2001, I had made a mix of between 59 and 60 minutes, containing 622 different tracks.
The working-titles of the project were "BigSaw" and "Avalanche" but in the end Frans (again) came up with the idea to call it "Mission Impossible" and to use a variation on the opening words of the TV-series for the intro of the mix.
Sjon Jansen found the perfect images for the cover and the back of the jewelcase and David Washington was prepared to help me with the vocals of the text in the intro. Fortunately, Ben Liebrand did not mind that I compared his fame in the art of mixing with Rembrandt's fame in the art of painting:-). In fact, he was pretty fond of the mix as a whole, and he especially loved the intro! (which is a GREAT compliment to get from "the inventor of the mix-intro!!)
The Swedish cook of the Muppet show was added in the intro because making a mix can, to some extention, be compared with preparing a good meal.
The text "en als de puzzel klaar is, is 't heel mooi" just before "Back to life" is starting was spoken by my son Sem (4 years old at that time). Making him say this in front of a microphone took about 1 hour of the 1000:-)
The music under the words in the intro is from Tower's album "Titan" (1983, I believe). Try to play the mix looped and you will see that the end of the mix almost seamlessly fits to the beginning.
Ever since I "published" this mix, I kept on receiving only very positive reactions from listeners all over the world!
Enough for now.....
